Do not use this wiring diagram. Install Intermatic ST01 instead.
This wiring is against National electric code, and manufacturer does not recommend. Using ground wire as Neutral can be potentially dangerous.
If Box does NOT have neutral, then do NOT use GE 15312 Use Intermatic battery-operated ST01C timer instead Buy: Resource ST01C is battery operated and does not need Neutral. Rated for any load or voltage.
CFL, LED, motor loads etc. Use for single-pole or 3-way, or Dawn-dusk or programmable If timer does not work after power is turned ON, try reversing Timer Black and Timer Blue wires Use Intermatic ST01 when box does not have neutral wire Reverse dawn-dusk operation to dusk-dawn GE 15312 timer has astronomic function to turn Lights ON at dusk and OFF at Dawn. To reverse operation, connect timer red and blue wires. If you want dawn-to-dusk operation instead of dusk-to-dawn, then connect red wire to blue wire. How to wire GE 15312 timer/ 3-way With Neutral wire -and- without Neutral wire If your 3-way switches do not have Neutral wire, then one box will have only 3 wires (plus bare ground wire) Illustration shows typical 3-way switching with Neutral wire GE 15312 will replace 1 of the 3-way switches. Remaining 3-way switch must be re-wired as shown below. Or replace remaining 3-way switch with ordinary single-pole switch. Illustration shows LINE side and LOAD side Line means the wire that comes from breaker box. Load means the wire that goes to lights Identify wire that connects to common screw.
Disconnect this wire from switch. Isolate this wire for testing. Turn power ON. Tape tester leads to wood sticks.
Test wire to bare ground wire. If wire tests Hot, then this is Line side Hot wire that connects to Black wire on timer.

If wire does not test Hot, then this is Load side wire that connects to Blue wire on timer. Typical 3-way switch wiring Common screw is dark-colored Traveler-screws are brass colored Line side connects to line from breaker Load side connects to light Wire from breaker has Black Hot wire and white neutral wire Common screw is usually dark. Timer replaces one 3-way switch Other 3-way must be rewired Three wires + ground wire travel between switches Remaining 3-way switch is rewired Replace LOAD side switch with timer Timer Black wire must always connect to Hot from breaker. Timer Blue must always connect to Load wire. Timer White wire must be connected to neutral wire, to power timer clock. Neutral wires are white, and are generally covered with wire connector and shoved to back of box.
No Neutral wire 3-way switches One box will have only 3 wires 3-way switches with NO Neutral Wire colors can be different. Look for: one of the two boxes will have ONLY 3 wires (plus ground wire). If one of the 3-way boxes has just 3 wires, then use the following wiring diagrams. Must have ground wire for GE 15312 timer to work for this installation. What if no neutral and no ground wire?
With No Neutral and No Ground, then use Intermatic ST01C timer and use same illustrations shown on this page except ST01c timer does not have white wire. Timer Blue wire connects to wire going to light, and joins wire from Line side switch Red connects to red traveller that connects to line side switch When line switch is moved up-down, this action will connect or disconnect power to timer Red wire.

When power is connected to Red wire, the timer scheduled operation reverses. When power is disconnected from Red wire, timer resumes scheduled operation. Use Intermatic ST01C Buy: One cable has 3 wires, one has 2 wires Identify wires inside 3-way switch box 3-way switch box will have minimum 3 wires. Most 3-way boxes will have 5 wires (plus ground wires). Other 3-way boxes can have 7 wires, or more depending on number of junctions connected inside the box. One cable has 3 wires plus ground Second cable has 2 wires plus ground Find HOT wire Each 120Volt electrical box inside residential home has 1 black hot wire except for 3-way and 4-way switches, and 240volt outlets fround on clothes dryer etc.
To find the hot wire: Take photo image so wires can be put back. Remove both 3 ways switches. Mark each wire that connects to common screw on 3-way switch. Hot wire will always connect to common screw. Separate all wires for testing. Leave ground wires together Tape tester leads to wood sticks for safety. Turn power ON.
Keep hands away. Stand on dry boards. Test each wire inside box to bare ground wire.
Tester will light up on one wire. This is the Hot wire.
Next test Hot wire to all other wires inside box except bare ground. Tester will light up on Neutral.
